Legendary Actress Maggie Smith Dies At Age 89

Downton Abbey and Harry Potter actress Maggie Smith died Friday at the age of 89.

Smith's sons, Toby Stevens and Chris Larkin, announced his death in a statement. BBC.

“It is with great sadness that we must announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital in the early hours of this morning, Friday 27th September,” they said. . “She was a very private person, but in the end she was with her friends and family.”

Smith's cause of death and funeral arrangements had not been disclosed as of Friday morning.

Smith won two Oscars and four Emmys, and was hailed as one of the most beloved British actors of all time. The talented actress nominated In addition to winning Best Actress for Travels With My Aunt, she went on to win four more Oscars for Best Supporting Actor for Othello, A Room With a View, and Gosford Park.

“She leaves behind two sons and five beloved grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of a special mother and grandmother,” her sons said in a statement.
