OpenAI Wants to Build Data Centers Using Electricity Equal to 1% of Entire World’s Consumption

OpenAI's ambitious plans to build AI data centers with unprecedented power requirements have sparked debate about the feasibility and environmental impact of such projects.

forbes report OpenAI, a leading generative AI company, recently made a bold proposal to the U.S. government, asking for help building massive data centers, each requiring a staggering 5 gigawatts of power. The request, made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during a White House meeting, raised eyebrows among industry experts and government officials alike.

To put the scale of these proposed data centers into perspective, 5 gigawatts is equivalent to the output of five nuclear reactors, enough to power a large city like Miami. This power requirement is up to 100 times greater than that of a typical large data center. If OpenAI were to build seven such data centers, as Altman reportedly proposed, their combined power consumption would be twice as much as the entire state of New York, or the current global power consumption. This corresponds to approximately 1%.

The motivation behind OpenAI promoting these giant data centers is clear. To maintain our position as the leader in generative AI. As technology continues to advance, the computing power required to develop and run these AI models will only increase. The proposed data centers are estimated to cost around $100 billion each and would house 2 million AI chips and consume the enormous amount of power needed to operate them.

But industry experts have expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a project. Constellation Energy CEO Joe Dominguez expressed doubts about the possibility of meeting these power demands, saying, “Not only has it never been done before, but as an engineer it's not possible.'' I don't think so.” The spare capacity needed to continuously power these data centers is not available on most power grids.

In addition to the technical challenges, the environmental impact of these proposed data centers is also being scrutinized. Not only do data centers require large amounts of electricity, they also consume large amounts of water for cooling. Resistance to new data center development is growing as local and national governments around the world become increasingly concerned about the strain on power grids and water supplies.

Breitbart News previously reported that Microsoft commissioned the restart of its infamous nuclear facility, Three Mile Island, to feed its insatiable AI machine.

In a move that shows AI's energy demand will continue to grow, Bloomberg reports that Microsoft has signed a deal with Constellation Energy, the largest U.S. nuclear reactor operator, to revive the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. It was reported that it was tied. The tech giant has agreed to purchase the entire production from the power plant, which is scheduled to restart operations in 2028, with the aim of ensuring a reliable source of carbon-free power for its data centers.

It's worth noting that Sam Altman has a history of pitching ambitious projects with spectacular personalities. Earlier this year, he reportedly sought up to $7 trillion for a new AI chip and the power to run it, a figure that was widely met with widespread distrust. Although OpenAI has since denied that such a multitrillion-dollar project was under consideration, the scale of Altman's ambitions remains clear.
