Verizon users across the country reported outages Monday morning due to “issues” with the network, a company spokesperson told the Post.
downdetector.com – Provides real-time updates on internet and phone services – Reports of Verizon outages spiked around 10 a.m. More than 100,000 incidents reported as of 11 a.m.
The outage primarily affected users on the East Coast and Midwest, including New York.
“We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers,” a Verizon spokesperson told the Post in a statement. “Our engineers are diligent and working quickly to identify and resolve issues.”
Disgruntled mobile phone users took to social media to report that their phones were in SOS mode.
Users will know that their iPhone is in SOS mode because the bar in the top right corner of the screen disappears and is replaced with “SOS.”
This feature was introduced on iPhone 14 to allow customers to make emergency calls when they are not connected to cellular service.
SOS mode only allows calls to local emergency numbers. It will automatically turn off when cell service is restored.
The only other option was for users to manually turn on Wi-Fi calling. This allows calls and texts only when the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
When users turn on Wi-Fi calling, they are asked to approve or change their home address linked to their phone in case they need to make an emergency call.
The service “problems” may have started late Sunday night.
One Post reporter said his cell phone went out around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and his cell phone was locked into SOS mode. She resumed service around 6 a.m. Monday.
