Tens of thousands of longshoremen could walk off the job and go on strike as early as Tuesday if the International Longshoremen's Association and the American Maritime Union fail to reach a deal.

The Port of Baltimore has five public terminals and 12 private terminals.

According to a February press release from the Maryland Governor's Office, 1.1 million TEU containers were shipped in 2023.

Last year, the Port of Baltimore led U.S. ports in “handling of automobiles, light trucks, agricultural and construction equipment, and imported sugar and gypsum,” according to the Maryland State Archives. It was also the second largest exporter of coal.

As a port strike approaches, the port workers' union's demand for a complete ban on automation is called into question.

More than 847,000 cars and light trucks passed through its terminal last year.

The Maryland State Archives said the Port of Baltimore is “within an overnight driving distance of one-third of the nation's population.”

Maryland estimates that the port and its operations provide $70.28 billion in economic value to the state.
