NPR host says Harris may lose because Latinos are breaking for Trump, accuses them of wanting ‘to be white’

NPR radio host slams Hispanics for supporting Trump. I want to be white He warned Democrats that Vice President Kamala Harris could lose the election due to a lack of public support.

Maria Hinojosa criticized Latinos who support former President Donald Trump in comments to Jonathan Capehart on Sunday's MSNBC show.

“They don't want to be identified with other immigrants.”

“Why is the Democratic share of the Latino vote decreasing?” he asked.

“Latinos want to be white. They want to be with the cool kids,” Hinojosa said.

Additionally, she said some Latinos cited Trump's business background to explain their support, but tried to counteract that by bringing up Trump's bankruptcy record.

“They don't want to be equated with Mexican immigrants, including myself and the other immigrants that President Donald Trump speaks so badly of,” she continued. “So they're like, 'I'd rather stay with him.'”

Mr. Capehart asked Mr. Hinojosa to respond to an NBC News Telemundo poll showing that Ms. Harris' net support among Latinos has declined dangerously for Democrats. Harris' lead among Latinos was 14%, much smaller than President Joe Biden's 36% lead in 2020 and Hillary Clinton's 50% lead in 2016. Obama had a similar lead among Latinos in 2012, at 40%.

Hinojosa went on to say that a sharp collapse in support among Latinos could spell doom for the Harris-Waltz campaign.

“These numbers could cost Kamala Harris the election,” she added. “For everything I've said that Latinos could push her to the top, these numbers could also bring her down.”

At a recent rally by the Harris-Waltz campaign aimed at drumming up support among Latinos, the actual number of Latinos in attendance was disappointingly low.
