Alabama Crimson Tide true freshman cornerback Zavian Brown faced the biggest test of his young career this past weekend, playing his fourth game in school history against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs. We played against each other.
Brown, a five-star recruit from the Class of 2024, quickly impressed the coaching staff this offseason and was assigned a key role in the Crimson Tide's secondary starting in Week 1.
And the results were good. Through the first three games, Brown had seven targets for 27 yards and allowed just two catches while playing 86 coverage snaps. This led the University of Alabama's trio of five-star true freshman cornerbacks.
However, Georgia has made significant strides in competition with Western Kentucky, South Florida and Wisconsin. And when the Bulldogs fell behind significantly at the beginning of Week 5, they turned to Brown and tried to pick up some wins in one-on-one matchups.
Brown, who has played the most snaps in a game thus far, had a team-high nine targets in Week 5, nearly all of them deep. The average depth of targets thrown to him was 21.9 yards.
Georgia quarterback Carson Beck came into play early in the first half, but Brown made good coverage and forced interference on an offensive pass to top wideout Dominik Lovett, ultimately leading to the Bulldogs' first loss of the game. It messed up the drive.
But the action only started to pick up in the second half, with Beck repeatedly looking in Brown's direction as the Bulldogs tried to fight back.
It all started when the true freshman gave up a 12-yard touchdown pass in a one-on-one loss to Arian Smith, putting Georgia back up 30-15.
On the next drive, Brown allowed a fourth-and-6 to Dillon Bell, but Beck fumbled on the ensuing play, ending the drive.
With less than seven minutes remaining, a big play occurred as Georgia was once again within 33-21. Looking for a big play, Beck targeted Brown again, hitting Arian Smith with a back shoulder that was not in the cornerback's best position for a 47-yard gain from the sideline. That ultimately led to a touchdown two plays later, cutting the lead to five.
But in the most important moment, when Beck turned again twice on the final drive for a one-on-one with Colby Young on 2nd-and-8 deep after getting inside Alabama, the 5-star star The cornerback played an active role. Brown participated in close coverage during the game and was forced to burn incompletely.
After Georgia got a first down and reached Alabama's 20-yard line, Beck looked like he was going for another one-on-one matchup, but Brown called a ball game and set up for a back shoulder. He set up the ball and finally intercepted the ball. The Crimson Tide won a 41-34 victory in one of the biggest games of the year.
Brown has been preparing for that moment all year, but nothing could have been bigger than the end of Saturday's game when the cornerback made the game-winning move.
“[Defensive Backs] “Coach Mo (linguist), he kept emphasizing his vertical, vertical game,” Brown said after the game. From Matt Stahl of Alabama.com. “Back shoulder. This was coming. A moment ago I was turning away from my back shoulder, but all I know is that if I had another chance, I would turn to that guy and the ball would be right there.” I knew that.”
Brown did just that, drawing celebrations in the moment and beyond, showing he was ready for the biggest moment of his life as a true freshman.
Through four games this year, Brown has allowed just a 43.8 percent catch rate and a 58.6 passer rating. But he achieved his most important accomplishment, the first interception of his career, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
