‘Good Times’ star John Amos dead at 84

John Amos, who played the father on “Good Times,” has died. He was 84 years old.

Amos's publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed the news of his death to The Associated Press on Tuesday. No other details were immediately available.

One of Amos' first notable roles was as a sports anchor on WJM-TV's “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” He was also a frequent guest on the “Tim Conway Comedy Hour,'' which aired in 1970, before appearing on “Good Times'' in 1974.

Amos was also nominated for his role in the 1977 miniseries Roots.

Amos' son KC said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the transition of our father. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold…and love. “It was done,” he said. Many fans around the world consider him the father of television. His legacy will live on in television and film as an actor. ”
