PGA Tour players plan to donate through “Birdies for Augusta” after devastating hurricane damage

This week at the PGA Tour's Sanderson Farms Championship, defending champion Luke List announced that he and Henrik Norlander have devised a way to help local Hurricane Helen victims.

They call Augusta, Georgia home and will be participating in the Birdies for Augusta initiative to draw attention and raise money for the victims.

It was one of many areas hit hard by the Category 4 hurricane that made landfall last Thursday.

The duo plans to donate $500 to the local Red Cross for every birdie they make.

“I think we were on the same page in that we have to give back in any way we can,” List said Tuesday.

“I had dinner with my family last night and we came up with ideas together. I think it was in both of our hearts that we wanted to help support in Augusta and this is what we know now. It's the best way.”

The storm caused severe damage in six states and affected at least 182 states. Number of deaths reportedaccording to CNN.

List spoke last week about how it felt to see her community suffer so much.

“It's pretty mind-blowing to not only see but experience a place that you get to call home,” he said.

“It's sad. It's been a long weekend. I left town a little early to keep my family safe, but there are still power outages and water outages in many areas.”

List detailed how the community came together to begin the cleanup process before coming to Jackson, Mississippi with his family for the tournament.

“Everyone is dealing with it in their own way. It was great to see everyone come together, but in a way it felt like that's what you had to do in that moment. Escape. I was very lucky to get out when I could.”

The Georgia resident isn't the only golfer or course affected by Hurricane Helen. Augusta National Park suffered damage, but the full extent is still unknown.

John Daly announced Wednesday that he lost his home in Clearwater, Florida, due to the storm.

List and Norlander came together to raise money through the sport they make a living from.

Hopefully they can make a lot of birdies and make a big donation for their hometown.
