Seattle judge releases accused killer 27 hours after 65-year-old military veteran stabbed to death

A Washington state judge released a teenager a day after he was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a 65-year-old military veteran to death in his home.

On Friday, the Renton Police Department said 19-year-old Kayshawn Conscience Jimerson called 911 just after 2 p.m. and told the operator he had stabbed someone and would “stand outside with a knife.” . Jimerson also claimed self-defense during the call, police said.

“The 911 caller said he stabbed the handyman inside the house,” Susan Hassinger said. Renton Police told FOX 13 Seattle.

Witnesses told police they heard an argument and then saw a bloody Jimerson holding a large butcher knife, FOX 13 reported.

Jimerson remained at the scene and was taken into custody, police said.

Asked if they objected to Jimerson's release, law enforcement officials wrote “yes” in court records, saying “19-year-old Jimerson stabbed a 65-year-old man with a large knife during an argument.”

At his first court appearance, 27 hours after his arrest, Judge Michelle Gehrsen initially set bail at $50,000, even though he found probable cause for second-degree murder. Prosecutors are seeking $2 million bail.

Police said Jimerson posted bail and was released.

Renton police told FOX News Digital that prosecutors have filed a motion to increase bail and a hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Detectives told FOX 13 that surveillance video shows Jimerson chasing Gray from behind and hitting him in the back of the head with a large wooden club, then hitting him twice more in the head after he fell to the ground.

The video then shows Gray stand up, turn around and interact with Jimerson, and then Jimerson runs away as the two men enter the apartment out of view of the camera.

According to FOX 13, Jimerson recently returned to Washington state from Texas, where his mother lives.

FOX 13 reported that Gray was asked to do maintenance work by Jimerson's grandmother and had spent a day and a half cleaning the walls of the apartment before her death.

Gray lived with roommates in a one-story house across the street from the duplex where he was murdered, and they told FOX 13 he was a kind man who was always willing to lend a hand.
