Hovland withdrew from last week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and has not competed since the Tour Championship in Atlanta in August. The week before, at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines, Hovland described the 2024 season as “miserable.” One year away from winning the 2023 FedEx Cup, Hovland missed out on Augusta National, the U.S. Open and the Royal Troon Open. Although he finished alone in third place at Valhalla, the Norwegian had only one other top-10 finish on the PGA Tour last season.
Perhaps this injury helps explain those conflicts.
Even after that, Hovland fired and rehired swing coach Joe Mayo through the 2024 season, but no one knows the real reason for his troubles.
“Everyone plays bad golf sometimes, but I always feel like I have a very good understanding of why it happened,” Hovland said in Colorado.
“Even if I understand why it happens, I'm like, 'Well, how do I fix it?' That's been very difficult for me throughout this past year. But at the end of the day, I'm like, 'Well, how do I fix it?' I think I consoled myself by saying, “It's not broken.'' It's not my mind that's at fault; I have to think, “What if I can never play golf again?” It's like, “No, my machine is a little off.” With just a few adjustments to your machine, you'll be able to play good golf again. ”
Hopefully, Hovland can make a full recovery over the next three months and begin the 2025 PGA Tour season refreshed, healthy and ready. But there will be some pressure on him as the new year begins, especially as he has to strive to be selected for next year's Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black.
