Almost 7 in 10 New York City residents say Adams should resign: Poll

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing criminal charges of wire fraud, conspiracy and bribery that caused city residents to lose confidence in his ability to serve, New Marist reports. public opinion poll It was released on Friday.

According to the responses, 69% of those surveyed think he should resign, and 30% think he should serve out the remainder of his term. Over the past two years since Adams became mayor, his disapproval rating has soared by 50 percentage points.

As of October, 74% of New Yorkers disapproved of his tenure in office, compared to just 24% of New Yorkers who disapproved of his leadership in March 2022. 1% remained unsure of their abilities. Respondents were also asked whether they thought Adams had done anything illegal.

65% of residents believe he did something illegal, while 24% believe he did something unethical but not illegal. Eight percent of respondents believe he did nothing wrong, and one percent are still unsure.

Amid Adams' legal scandal, Democrats and Republicans have criticized him almost equally. When asked to reflect on the job Adams is doing as mayor, 48% of registered Republican voters strongly opposed his choice, and 49% of Democrats felt the same way.

New York residents with college degrees had the highest disapproval rate at 55%, followed by white New Yorkers with annual incomes of $50,000 or more, for a combined 53% for the latter two groups.

Geographically, residents of Manhattan and Brooklyn were the most dissatisfied with Adams. Among Manhattan survey participants, 46% disapproved of Mayor Adams, 30% disapproved, 14% supported him, and 10% strongly supported him. Zero percent wasn't sure.

Brooklyn residents were recorded as 46% strongly opposed, 21% opposed, 17% approved, 15% strongly approved, and 1% unsure.

Marist also collected data by gender, showing that 47% of men and women strongly disapproved. 28 percent of women disagree, 15 percent agree, 8 percent strongly agree, and 1 percent are unsure. 25% of men were relatively disapproval, 15% approved of Adams' leadership, 13% strongly approved, and 0% were still unsure.

If Adams does not resign, 63% of residents say New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) should begin the process to remove Adams from office, while 36% say Hochul should take such action. 2% are not sure. Fifty-five percent of residents do not think former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo should replace Adams as New York City mayor, 44% support the bill and 1% are unsure.

The survey was conducted by Marist Poll on September 30th and October 1st and received responses from 1,073 New York City residents ages 18 and older. The survey was distributed via text and online. The margin of error for the response was plus or minus 3.6 percentage points. Results for registered voters were within plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
