President Joe Biden surprises the White House Press conference Friday afternoon, it quickly exploded into chaos.
Biden began his press conference by boasting about his administration's supposedly thriving economy. After his speech, the president agreed to take some questions and asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to call reporters.
“So he came today, and you had to meet him, and you were here.”
Reporters had several opportunities to ask the president questions, but none asked about Hurricane Helen or the government's response to the disaster. Instead, much of the investigation concerned Israel and its potential planned response to an Iranian attack.
One journalist asked Biden: “Obviously this country has faced a number of crises in the past few days: hurricanes, port attacks, the situation in the Middle East. Can you talk about how the vice president has responded?” he asked. Who is running for president who has been working on these crises and what role has she played in the past few days?”
Fumbling for a response, Biden said, “Well, she — I'm in constant contact with her. She knows where we are — we're singing from the same sheet music. We, um, she helped pass all the laws, including the ones we were told we couldn't pass. They played a major role in everything we did. And her staff works with my staff in every way. we are doing it. ”
Immediately after Biden finished answering, the room erupted into chaos as many reporters shouted questions in a brief opportunity to get more answers from the president.
Biden appeared to smile and stare blankly at reporters in the crowd as White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tried to regain control of the room.
“I didn't call you,” Jean-Pierre shouted to one of the reporters.
As Mr. Biden left the field, a journalist asked him if he would reconsider withdrawing from the presidential race.
Mr. Biden turned around and jokingly replied, “I'm back.”
The room was filled with laughter.
Jean-Pierre continued his press conference, opening by saying, “This week, the United States faces a number of competing challenges, from tensions in the Middle East to port strikes that have threatened our supply chains.” A historic hurricane swept through an entire community, and moments like this highlight the importance of American leadership and resolve and show what is possible when we come together. ”
Meanwhile, people on the ground in disaster-hit areas have repeatedly accused the government of a slow response, claiming it has almost completely failed to assist those in need.
Jean-Pierre asserted that “a wide range of bipartisan officials, including the governors of all affected states, are working with us and commend the federal government's response.”
But Republican Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia, whose state was hit by hurricanes, said last week: “We called the White House. We spoke with the president's chief of staff, the FEMA administrator, and he said, '' criticized the government. Look, you're sending a signal to some rural communities that you're not paying attention. ”
Jean-Pierre reiterated that the government needs additional funds for disaster relief. She denied claims that FEMA funds were directed to aid illegal aliens.
A reporter began asking Jean-Pierre a question: “This is the first time President Biden has come to the press briefing room since, well, President Biden–“
“Yes,” replied Jean-Pierre. “You're welcome. You're welcome. I know how this question is going to go. It's going to be great.”
“It's going to be great,” she repeated with a laugh.
“Why didn't he come three and a half years ago?” the reporter asked.
Jean-Pierre raised his hand and said, “So he came today, and you had to meet him, and you were here.”
“Oh, hey, come on, he's here. He answered my questions,” she said.
