Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said in a letter Friday to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that military members and federal, state and local responders are awaiting orders from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He said a whistleblower told the office that he had been sitting around doing nothing while he was working. Government agencies (FEMA) dispatched to areas affected by Hurricane Helen.
“My office has reported and further confirmed that hundreds, if not thousands, of military personnel have been sent to North Carolina by the Department of Defense and are waiting for FEMA without doing anything.” Gates wrote.
“We have confirmed that FEMA personnel are at the hotel 24 hours a day awaiting orders. “Pre-disaster aid from FEMA was withheld, further exacerbating the emergency situation,” he added.
Gaetz slammed Mayorkas' comments Thursday, in which he said FEMA “doesn't have enough money to get us through” hurricane season.
“This news comes after FEMA spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on immigrants due to border czar Kamala Harris' open borders instead of prioritizing funding to Americans affected by disasters. ” Gates wrote. “This is also public. [knowledge] NGOs are using FEMA funds to purchase airline tickets for immigrants. ”
“The aftermath of Hurricane Helen is a disaster, and your overspending and unpreparedness has left Americans without access to food, water, medicine, and expecting help but no one is coming. ,” Gates said.
He asked Mayorkas to respond to the following questions by next Friday.
(1) What Department of Homeland Security and FEMA policies and regulations prevent emergency funds from being wasted on illegal immigrants? and
(2) What portion of FEMA's total budget for fiscal year 2024 can be guaranteed to be spent exclusively on American citizens? Also, what portion was or could have been spent on non-citizens? and
(3) In fiscal year 2024, what portion of the Disaster Relief Fund's funds will be spent on non-disaster relief programs, such as providing services to illegal aliens and providing routine training to authorized FEMA personnel from general appropriations? Have you healed?
On Friday, the death toll from Hurricane Helen reached 200, making it the deadliest hurricane since Hurricane Katrina.
