Cal student makes $100,000 field goal to win Pat McAfee contest

Pat McAfee donated more money than he probably planned on during the thrilling sixth week of “College GameDay.”

The ESPN show set in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday set up a weekly field goal challenge in which random fans attempt to kick a winner, but are rarely successful.

But this time, one student became $100,000 richer.

But it initially seemed like McAfee, a former NFL punter, would once again walk away with his wallet full.

Daniel, a Cal State engineering student, took on the challenge on Saturday morning. He played soccer in high school and had even kicked a football, but admitted he wasn't aiming for anything until his 33-yard attempt.

At $75,000, Daniel missed the kick to the right, but it was a much better kick than McAfee and the “GameDay” staff expected.

Some were skeptical before the kicks because of Daniel's shoe choice – slip-on Vans sneakers with no laces.

But McAfee wanted the sophomore to try again. However, the prize is $100,000, with an additional $100,000 going toward the show's already $500,000 donation to victims of Hurricane Helen.

With the stakes even higher, Daniel took a kick to center field, then leapt across the field to celebrate with McAfee.

This is only the second time this year that fans have successfully kicked a field goal on College Game Day.

Previously, a Texas A&M student won a $50,000 kick in Week 1.

This is the first time the “College GameDay” set has arrived in Berkeley, and will take place before the highly anticipated matchup between Cal and the Miami Hurricanes at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The two schools haven't faced each other since 2008, with the University of California leading the series 2-0.
