Ukraine Claims to Have Downed Russian Fighter Jet

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian military said Saturday it shot down a Russian fighter jet, but Russia claimed it had made advances in eastern Ukraine.

The Russian bomber was shot down near the city of Kostynivka in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian public broadcaster Saspyrne quoted Kostynivka military governor Serhii Kholbunov as saying. Photos showed the charred remains of the plane that landed at the house where the fire broke out.

Also in the partially occupied Donetsk region, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed on Saturday that it had captured the village of Gelanne Drouet.

If confirmed, the capture would come three days after Ukrainian forces announced they would be withdrawing from the frontline town of Vledal, about 33 kilometers (33 kilometers) from Gelin Drouet, after two years of intense defensive battles. .

Although unlikely to change the course of the war, the loss of Vuledar signals a deterioration in Kiev's position, due in part to Washington's refusal to give Ukraine permission to attack targets deep in Russian territory. It prevented Kiev from undermining Moscow's capabilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Saturday that he would present a “victory plan” at an Oct. 12 meeting of the Ramstein Group, which supplies Ukraine with weapons.

“We present a winning plan – clear, concrete steps towards a just end to the war. Only the determination of our partners and the strengthening of Ukraine can stop Russian aggression.” wrote X, adding that the 25th Ramstein Conference will be the first to be held at the summit level.

Zelenskiy presented the plan to US President Joe Biden in Washington last week. Although its contents have not been made public, it is known that the plan includes Ukraine's membership in NATO and the provision of long-range missiles to attack Russian territory.

Meanwhile, two people were killed in Russian shelling in Zaporizhzhya region in southern Ukraine, regional governor Ivan Fedorov announced.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced that Russia launched three guided missiles and 13 attack drones toward Ukraine starting Saturday night. The missile was intercepted, and three unmanned aircraft were shot down over the Odesa region, and 10 others were lost.

A Ukrainian drone crashed a passenger bus in the city of Horlivka in the partially occupied Donetsk region, injuring nine people, Ivan Prikhodko, the city's Russian-appointed mayor, announced.

Russia's Defense Ministry said on Saturday that its air defense forces shot down 10 Ukrainian drones overnight in three border regions: seven over the Belgorod region, two over the Kursk region and one over the Voronezh region. announced that it was.
