Head-scratching Bills play-calling leads to Texans’ walk-off field goal

Sean McDermott took full responsibility for Sunday's abysmal time management that helped the Texans beat the Bills 23-20.

Buffalo's coach tried to explain the events that led to the Bills being forced into a three-game through the air with the game tied at 20 and Buffalo 32 yards back to their own 3-yard line. It's my responsibility,” he said over and over again. A few seconds until playback.

Instead of going to the run game to force the Texans to take a timeout (he had taken all three timeouts), quarterback Josh Allen unsuccessfully tried to pass the ball deep three times in a row, leaving just 11 seconds behind. Only ate time out.

“I'm responsible for what the offense looks like at the end of the game,” McDermott said. “Tough situation. They hold three timeouts and have a good field goal kicker. We had to run the clock and move the chains, but that's on me. We did it there. I didn’t, and it’s my fault.”

After Buffalo was forced to punt, the Texans were able to get possession at the Bills' 46-yard line, and as expected, Kaimi Fairbairn allowed a 59-yard game-winning run on the Texans' final drive. Goal in time.

McDermott passed the ball three times and returned to his position, declining to say whether he supported the decision to have the result fall at his feet.

“If this happens three times in a row, you could potentially run six seconds slower each time, and you'd probably end up in a similar situation,” the Bills coach said. “In any case, we have to do a better job and it starts 100 percent with me.”

The Bills erased a 17-point hole in the third quarter, but ultimately fell short for the second straight game.
