Will we see change in Foxboro soon?
Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, could soon take over the starting job in New England, according to longtime Patriots reporter Mike Reese.
“Jerrod Mayo's answers regarding the QB situation during the day-after-game video conference have changed markedly compared to the past few weeks.” Reese posted on X on monday. “Mayo last week said the team's only way of winning games was 'unsustainable' and appears to be strongly considering a move.” [sic] To Drake May. ”
As recently as last week, the Patriots head coach remained true to his beliefs. On September 30, the day after New England's 30-13 loss to San Francisco in Week 4, Mayo told reporters that Jacoby Brissett was “100 percent our starter.”
Brissett was 100 percent despite finishing with a season-low passer rating of 70.8.
He was 100 percent despite three quarterback fumbles and one interception.
The Pats were 100 percent despite scoring just one offensive touchdown in their past two games and falling to 1-3 on the season.
A Patriots in-house reporter said the team “shaken by rebellion”
They needed some encouragement, but Sunday's Week 5 loss to a depleted Miami team didn't help.
Brissett avoided turnovers and completed 18 of 34 passes for 160 yards, but his passer rating of 65.8 was a season low.
LaMondre Stephenson scored New England's only touchdown, and the Patriots lost to the Dolphins, 15-10.
Having lost four straight, Mayo is below 100 percent.
When asked on Monday if he expected Drake Maye to start in Week 6, the head coach said: We have to look at every unit and every player and figure out how to utilize this roster to win games. ”
May has only seen the field once this season so far.
The rookie from North Carolina made his NFL debut in Week 4 with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 22 yards.
When the Patriots face C.J. Stroud and the 4-1 Houston Texans in Week 6, the challenge will be greater regardless of who lines up under center.
