Yankees turn to Clarke Schmidt for Game 3 vs. Royals

Clark Schmidt and Lewis Gil were in the bullpen for Game 1 of the ALDS, but the Yankees ultimately didn't need either of them.

For the rest of the series, only Gil stays there.

Schmidt will be the starter for Wednesday's Game 3 against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, manager Aaron Boone announced Monday, answering a question that has been the subject of discussion since the final week of the regular season. .

“[Schmidt] I can handle it,” Boone said. “And it's not like Lewis can't do it, because Lewis could be in the biggest spot in this series and we're going to need him.” So hopefully, if we move on. He will be back in the rotation soon. [for the ALCS]. However, I felt Clark was the best choice for Game 3. ”

Due to the built-in off days during the ALDS, the Yankees only needed three starters, with Gerrit Cole starting Game 1 (and Game 4 if needed) and Carlos Rodon starting Game 2 ( He started in Game 5 as needed.

However, the Yankees decided to use Schmidt in the middle of the series because Schmidt missed more than three months this season due to a strained lat muscle, and he showed improvement.

The right-handed pitcher started 16 games this year, pitching 85/3 innings and posting an ERA of 2.85, but the workload is lighter and should be fresh for October.

A highly confident Schmidt has pitched in the postseason before, although he was a reliever in the 2022 playoffs, and Boone said his edge and experience were “a little bit” a factor. He said that it was possible.

“We had to make a really difficult decision, but we felt like we had to make a good one, because we're talking about players that we have a lot of confidence in and feel like we can pass the ball to. '' Boone said. “If I decide to go with Lewis, I'm happy with what he can bring.

“But I feel like Clark has become just an outstanding pitcher in this league, not just since last May. [has] This year, we took it to the next level. I feel like he's throwing the ball really well right now. ”

Gill, who had a breakout season starting 29 games and pitching 151/3 innings with a 3.50 ERA, could be a weapon in the bullpen and works better than Schmidt in short spurts. and potentially generate more swings. -Miss.

Throughout the season, there were doubts that Gill, who had missed nearly all of the past two years of rehabilitation due to Tommy John surgery, would be in the bullpen to handle a career-high workload. The Yankees may find out about the situation. Like–but Boone said Gil was healthy.

The team considered having Gill throw out of the bullpen during the final week of the regular season to gain experience, but both Gill and Schmidt crossed the finish line healthy and were fully fit heading into the five days off. I wanted to make sure that I could train. ALDS.

“What I think now is, [it’s] It's best for him to fill a pen role for us, and I think Clark is in a position to be ready for Game 3,” Boone said. Will Gill provide length? , suggested it could be thrown into high leverage. Spotted out of the bullpen.

Gill pitched well last month against the Royals, giving up one run in five innings, but Schmidt hasn't played against the Royals this season, so that could be an advantage.

“I felt like towards the end he was throwing the ball like he was in the season opener. I think he was one of the best pitchers in the league,” Boone said. “I feel like that’s where he belongs.”
