Ricki Lake had a “positive” experience of becoming famous at the age of 18, but even after the huge success of the movie “Hairspray” he found himself homeless.
“My career stopped when I was about 21 or 22, and I wasn't getting the big roles that I wanted,” Lake said of the downside of acting during the cast.i choose jenny garth and me“I was really shocked.
“I went from making all this money to not making anything, and I had to give up my house. And then I was homeless for a short period of time. I had to move, but… It was the most humbling experience for which I am so grateful.'' Lake revealed that she lost between $200,000 and $300,000 during that time.
“But it taught me so much about the value of a dollar,” she said. “And thankfully, at the time I didn’t have a family to support.”

At the time, Lake also went on a “crash crazy diet” and lost 100 pounds.
“One of the reasons I stopped getting roles, one of the reasons I couldn't do anything anymore, was because the novelty of playing the fat girl had worn off a little bit,” Lake explained. “And I felt like the only thing I had control over in my life was my body and how I took care of myself.”
Lake's talk show came to her soon after and made the actress “off the hook” [her] poverty. “

Lake recently underwent further weight loss changes after refusing to participate in Ozempic.
“Doctors were recommending this drug to people who were overweight,” Lake recalled in an interview on “Good Morning America.” “And he said you can't be successful without it. That's what he told me, really. And I like a challenge, and I like proving people wrong. So that got me excited. I just didn't feel like doing it, so I wanted to try it myself.”
Lake said it was the “highest” he had ever felt in his life.
“I have this new marriage and I am so happy with this wonderful man,” she said. “I'm a perfect person. And if there's one thing that went wrong in our lives, it's that we were carrying extra weight.”

Lake began her weight loss journey with husband Ross Burningham in the fall of 2023.
Lake married Burningham. The two met through mutual friends and began dating in 2020.
The actress shared that she started intermittent fasting and dove into the keto diet. The couple also started exercising, including Pilates.
“This is a lifestyle change,” Lake explained on “GMA.” “I've made this my job and it brings me joy. I just… love it. I think it's safe to say I'm in the best shape of my life.
