Tom Cotton Presses FCC for Expediting Soros Radio Station Purchases

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) facilitated George Soros' acquisition of more than 200 radio stations in 40 markets just weeks before Election Day. It's ringing the alarm.

The Arkansas senator sent a letter to FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel questioning the FCC's decision to bypass national security review and facilitate Soros' acquisition. The decision could allow prominent left-wing billionaires to exert significant influence over the airwaves in the days leading up to the presidential election. election.

Cotton believes that rushing FCC approval “raises serious concerns about the FCC's process, political impartiality, and risks to national security.”

He said the acquisition would “impact more than 165 million monthly listeners on Audacity, a network that includes conservative programming from Sean Hannity, Dana Loesch, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, and Erick Erickson.” “I will give you that,” he said.

The acquisition of a radio station by Soros Fund Management (SFM) would normally trigger a thorough national security review. Cotton said SFM received $400 million in foreign investment for the acquisition.

“Under current FCC rules, foreign ownership of U.S. radio stations may not exceed 25%.” new york post reported. “Public documents show that Mr. Soros accepted foreign investment for bid and then filed a filing with the commission requesting an exception to the normal review process.”

“The FCC's decision to expedite his transaction means that such a transaction must be approved by the full Commission without first going through the national security review process, a process that can take up to a year or more. This is the first time in modern history that this has happened.” post Added.

A one-year delay would push the purchase well past the election period.

“It would be naive to think the timing was a coincidence, and it would be naive to think that a Soros-funded network would do justice to conservative talk shows in the weeks leading up to an election,” Cotton said. “The FCC reportedly attempted to approve the SFM transaction with only 48 hours' notice,” he said.

Additionally, Rosenworcel was the only FCC commissioner invited to comment on the matter before handing it over to FCC staff.

The decision was ultimately approved on a party-line vote by the committee, with three Democrats suddenly voting in favor of the deal and two Republicans voting against it.

Cotton is pressuring the FCC for a decision. He asked Rosenworcel to answer questions about the process by October 24, 2024, days before the voting deadline.
