On Thursday, a car-on-vehicle gunfight broke out on the northbound side of Route 5 near South Lorena Street, closing all lanes.

Police said two people, one driving a gold Cadillac sedan and the other a dark-colored Dodge Durango, got into a deadly shootout on the highway.

They also reported that the rear window of at least one other vehicle appeared to be broken.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), both cars were traveling in the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway when a Cadillac rear-ended another vehicle around 4:10 p.m. Thursday.

Two men in a Dodge Durango pulled up next to the Cadillac and began firing at the two people inside. The driver managed to make a U-turn on the highway, but ended up colliding with another car and coming to a halt.

“The occupants of the Dodge Durango got out and began firing at the occupants of the gold Cadillac,” CHP Lt. Bob Purvis said Thursday. “The driver of the gold Cadillac was able to make a U-turn and return southbound in the northbound lanes.”

The two suspects immediately fled to a car and drove away after firing shots.

The driver of the Cadillac was taken to a hospital by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he remains in surgery, according to the California Highway Patrol. A passenger died on the highway.

The two suspects are still being investigated by authorities.
