New Jersey boy, 12, killed in freak accident after tree falls on him while playing in backyard

A 12-year-old boy was killed when a tree fell on him while playing with friends in his backyard in New Jersey.

Just after 12 p.m. Monday, Lawrence Township police officers were called to a residence on a report of a tree falling on a 12-year-old boy, according to a press release from the department.

Officers were able to free the boy from under the tree and perform CPR.

Police said the boy was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Lawrence Township School District shared a letter sent to parents at the school with Fox News Digital. The letter identified the boy as Lucas Schwartz.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Lawrence Middle School (LMS) 7th grade student Lucas Schwartz has passed away in a tragic accident. We extend our deepest condolences to his family,” the letter said. “This student previously attended Eldridge Park Elementary School and then Lawrence Middle School, so many students and staff will be affected by this news. As a school district, we will do everything we can to support our community. We are doing things.”

Lawrence Township School District announced it will have grief counselors on staff to assist students and staff in the aftermath of the accident.

In addition to grief counselors, the district announced it will also have therapy dogs and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition on school grounds to provide support.

“We are saddened by the loss of our school community and will make every effort to support you and your child as needed. We want to keep parents up to date with the needs of the district. We appreciate everyone's assistance in providing information and responding to this tragic situation,'' the district continued in a statement.

Investigators determined that Schwartz was playing with friends in his backyard when strong winds caused a tree to fall, shocking and fatally injuring Schwartz.

Police said they are actively investigating the incident.

A GoFundMe page and meal train has been set up for the family.

“Experiencing the pain of a mother who tragically lost her child in the blink of an eye is something I will never forget!!! Lucas was my neighbor!” Letitia Marrow Jordan said. He posted on Facebook promoting a page to support the family.
