DNA forensics helps identify remains found in Colorado freezer as teenager missing for nearly 20 years

A human head and hand found in the freezer of a western Colorado home that was recently sold before its discovery in January may belong to a 16-year-old girl who went missing nearly 20 years ago. It turns out.

On January 12, people cleaning a home in Grand Junction, Colorado, about 320 miles west of Denver, found a human head and hand inside a freezer.

On Friday, the Mesa County Coroner's Office announced that DNA testing identified the victim as Amanda Leariel Overstreet.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office said Overstreet is believed to have been around 16 years old at the time of her disappearance, adding that she had not been seen or heard from since April 2005.

Ms. Overstreet is the daughter of the previous owner of the house, which has changed hands many times since then.

The body has been identified as Overstreet, but investigators continue to investigate the circumstances of her disappearance, and forensic tests are continuing to seek evidence.

Police told Houston Public Media that no arrests have been made and no suspects have been released.

The sheriff's office added in a social media post that the home at the center of the murder investigation has a new owner who has no connection to the case, respecting the privacy of the current owners and neighbors. He called on the people to do so.
