MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki Breaks Down How One Congressional District Could Decide Election

MSNBC national political correspondent Steve Kornacki spoke Wednesday about how Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District could decide the 2024 election.

The 2nd District, which includes Omaha and surrounding suburbs, would be 269-269 in the upcoming election if Harris wins the Great Lakes battleground state and Republican candidate Donald Trump holds the Sunbelt state and the 2nd Congressional District. There is a possibility of a tie. Kornacki said on “The Chris Jansing Report.'' If Harris wins this constituency along with key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, she will secure the 270 electoral votes needed to become the next president.

“If Trump gets these four states, [Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia] …And then you get to 270-268, and then you see the special importance of this to Democrats in the Omaha district. Because, look, things are turning blue now, but if in this scenario Donald Trump is going to flip that one Congress. They won the district in 2016 but lost in 2020. It's a 269-269 tie. So what happens? The election will be left to the House of Representatives,” Kornacki said.

Kornacki said that because Republicans have a larger voting delegation in the House, a 269-269 tie would mean a “significant” advantage for Trump. He explained that the 2nd District is expected to favor Democrats and give one electoral vote to Vice President Kamala Harris. “The rules are that not every member gets a vote, but each state in the House gets one vote. So even if your delegation has more than 40 members, like California, , even one person, like North Dakota, has one vote each. And Republicans are certainly expected to have even more delegates, regardless of which party controls the House. “There's no question that Republicans would have a significant advantage, and in a 269-269 scenario, President Trump would have an advantage,” Kornacki said.

Harris currently leads Trump in the 2nd District, 52% to 42%. According to A New York Times/Siena College poll on September 28th showed that President Trump won In Nebraska, President Joe Biden won the 2nd District with 56.4% of the vote, holding four of the five electoral votes.

Only in Nebraska and Maine. two states Divide the electoral votes based on which candidate won each district. Each state allocates two electoral votes to the winner of the state's popular vote and hands one vote to the candidate who wins the popular vote in each congressional district.
