NC county Democratic chair resigns after Trump sign stealing charges

A North Carolina county Democratic Party chairman has resigned after being arrested and charged with stealing a road sign supporting former President Trump.

Moore County Democratic Party announced on Monday Lowell Simon, 68, of West End, North Carolina, announced that he has resigned from his position following allegations related to the theft of political signs.

“While we appreciate the hard work and dedication he has shown to the Democratic Party and our community, the Moore County Democratic Party cannot and will not tolerate the defacement of political signs or other illegal activity,” the party said in a Facebook post. I will not tolerate it.” .

Moore County authorities on Friday arrested a man who was removing political signs on Oct. 10.

The sheriff's office said: Deputies recognized the man as Simon and then followed him to his residence and found a political sign on his car. He admitted to removing the sign and it was returned to its original owner. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was charged with two misdemeanor counts of theft of political signs, officials said. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.

His court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 30 in Moore County District Court, the sheriff's office said.

Simon said he “shouldn't have done that” and said the worst of the “angels” defeated him. WRAL News reported. He said signs for Trump were interfering with signs for Trump himself.

He added that he had been warning people for years to stay away from political signs he disagreed with, but was furious.

“If people, myself included, try to break the law, there should be consequences,” he said. “But the law should be applied equally. I understand that sometimes you get the perpetrator and sometimes you don't, but it needs to be applied equally.”

The party said Mr Simon had offered an apology for his actions and his resignation.
