Alleged ISIS-linked terrorist Nasir Tawhedi denied release in preliminary hearing: report

A judge in Oklahoma has denied the release of an Afghan resident of the state who was charged with planning a terrorist attack on Election Day.

The judge ruled that there was probable cause to proceed to trial against Nasir Ahmad Tauhedi. The 27-year-old is charged with providing materials to a terrorist organization and conspiring to obtain firearms for terrorist acts, KOCO News 5 reported.

The FBI said Taewedi was in contact with ISIS contacts as he planned the plan.

Tawhidi arrived in the United States in September 2021 after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. He had previously worked as a security guard for the CIA in his home country and was being vetted for that role. He was tested at least one more time before transferring to Oklahoma State.

Officials said Tauhedi had been in contact with a person known as Malik. It is affiliated with ISIS-K, the Afghan branch of ISIS.

The FBI said it tracked Tauhedi as he donated to ISIS-related charities and viewed ISIS propaganda online. Taouedi's family members were also arrested this week in France's Haute-Garonne department on suspicion of planning another attack, according to France's anti-terrorism public prosecutor's office.

The identity of the family member in France has not been released, but authorities said the person, 22, was arrested along with two others.

“Recent arrests by France and the FBI’s Oklahoma City field office demonstrate the importance of partnership in detecting and thwarting potential terrorist attacks. U.S. and French law enforcement collaboration contributed to these achievements. The FBI's top priority is to prevent criminal activity. “We work to prevent terrorism, and we work with our foreign and U.S. partners to uncover any conspiracies and protect our communities from violence. We are committed to protecting them,” the FBI told FOX News Digital in a statement.

U.S. officials claimed last week that Tauhedi had been vetted three times. The first time was when he served with the CIA in Afghanistan, the second time was when he came to the United States on Humanitarian Parole from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during the withdrawal, and the third time was when he was approved for SIV.
