Billie Eilish certainly seems to have gotten everything she wanted on Wednesday night.
At the first of three sold-out shows on his “Hit Me Hard and Soft” tour at New York's Madison Square Garden, the 22-year-old pop phenom performed the sought-after performance. I got all the love I wanted and then some more.
Eilish said, almost embarrassed by the deafening cheers. “Thank you for being here and participating.”
But when she sang “Everything I wanted” — the 2019 hit that won Eilish one of her nine Grammy Awards and her second consecutive Record of the Year award — it didn't feel like she was exactly living the dream.
In fact, on her first tour without her producer brother Finneas, she seemed conflicted about it all. As she stood alone with only her emotions on the minimalist stage that spanned the entire length of the arena, she didn't seem too pleased with the magnitude of this moment.
But unlike other young pop divas who try their hardest, Eilish has always been a passive superstar. And there, from the sensual intimacy of “Wildflower'' to the haunting harmonies of “When the Party's Over,'' there's the story of what she meant to the garden public who identified with her. Charm and empathy are dormant.
In the latter, after asking for and accepting silence, she began to sing while lying on the stage. It was like she was inviting you into her bedroom.
But it wasn't exactly a slumber party. This was one woman's confession. Never was this more evident than when she took the ballad “The Greatest” from soft to hard, from lullaby to arena anthem.
Still, Irish songs such as 2024's “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” “Lunch,” “Bury a Friend,” and “Oxytocin” from 2019's “When We All Fall” There was also a moment when he made the arena jump (literally, the floor shook). Where are you going in your sleep? ” and 2021’s “Happier Than Ever,” respectively.
And in an unexpected twist, she even felt confident enough to perform her biggest hit, “Bad Guy,” relatively early in the show.
She should have – there was so much more to come.
“What Was I Made for?” Her “Barbie” ballad, which won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song earlier this year, is one of the sweetest and most sincere. won a great sing-along.
And in a surprise surprise, Eilish happily reunited with Finneas for the final two songs. “Happier Than Ever” and her current hit “Birds of a Feather” had the audience floating to the rafters.
In that moment, it really felt like everything she wanted.
