Pete Alonso has huge NLCS Game 5 for Mets with home run

Any of the remaining games in the NLCS could be Pete Alonso's last with the Mets, but the pending free agent clearly isn't going to sit down and fight, if at all.

Alonso's four points on Friday night were highlighted by a huge three-run home run in the first inning of the season-extending 12-6 win over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League CS.

Just as Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer in the first inning of Game 2, sparking the Mets' victory, on Friday night Alonso was hit by a midfielder from Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty. He hit a 3-run shot over the wall and took an early lead.

Lindor and Brandon Nimmo reached with a single and a walk, respectively, to score ahead of Alonso.

This was an early step in the right direction for the Mets after the Dodgers went 10-2 overnight to take a 3-1 series lead.

It was Alonso's fourth home run of the postseason, tying him with Mark Vientos for the team lead, but it was his first appearance in six games since Game 3 of the National League District Series against the Phillies.

This home run also prevented the Mets from giving up a total of 17 hits with runners in scoring position.

Alonso entered the series with a batting average of .133 (2 hits for 15) with no extra base hits or RBIs through the first four games of the series.

The four-time All-Star also walked and gave up five runs in the Mets' third inning, and an inning later, he got his third timely hit off Dodgers reliever Brent Honeywell.

Alonso added a looping single to center field in the eighth inning, scoring on Starling Marte's fourth RBI single of the game to maintain a 12-6 lead.
