Shooting at Mississippi trail ride leaves 3 dead, 8 wounded: sheriff

Three people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting at a trail ride party celebrating a school football victory in Holmes County, Mississippi, hours after the game ended.

Holmes County Sheriff's Office: Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Sheriff Willie March responded to a report of a shooting on Highway 17. told WLBT.

March said the shooting happened Friday night, about three to four hours after Holmes County Unified Schools' homecoming game, when a large group of young people decided to party on a trail ride.

Authorities said some people at the party got into a fight, pulled out guns and opened fire.

The three people killed were identified as Martel Gibson (25), Shundra Chesnutt (19), and John Jenkins (19).

Eight other victims were injured and taken to the hospital.

According to the sheriff, about 200 to 300 people were celebrating on the mountain trail when they heard gunshots and fled. Associated Press.

“To be honest, it was a complete mess,” March said. “The shooting just started and people started running.”
