Johnson avoids Jan. 6 question, talks about foreign wars

CNN's Jake Tapper went after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) about former President Trump's threat of violence after the January 6 incident, but the congressman instead talked about foreign wars. .

Johnson joined CNN's “State of the Union” on Sunday, where Tapper asked Republicans about Trump's comments about using violence against political opponents. Tapper asked Johnson about the Honor Caucus, which he created when he joined Congress, and how it ties into President Trump's remarks.

“Jake, you know, that's not what he's talking about here. He's talking about a gang of dangerous, violent people destroying public property.” Mr. Johnson said.

Tapper interjected that Trump was talking about Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and other Americans. Johnson dismissed the comment and said Trump had not mentioned Schiff. Mr Johnson said the former president had been under attack since he “stepped down the golden escalator” in 2015.

“He's the most attacked and maligned politician in American history. They tried to kill him twice in the last few months. So this is real and he's acutely aware of it.” Johnson said.

Tapper asked who “they” were. Prime Minister Johnson said he was talking about an assassination threat from Iran.

“The political attacks are relentless, baseless, and have continued to pursue him ever since they concocted the Russian collusion hoax and tried to impeach him twice. In short, they have done great damage to the American psyche. We gave,” Johnson said.

The speakers then spoke about international wars and the United States' role in them, claiming that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been in office.
