Four dead after helicopter crashes in Houston radio tower

A helicopter crashed into a radio tower in Houston Sunday night, killing all four people on board, including a child, authorities said.

A privately owned R44 helicopter crashes in Houston's Second Ward just before 8 p.m., with video showing a massive fire spreading about 600 feet above the ground.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, but police confirmed that one of the four killed was a child, without disclosing their ages. All four people were on board the helicopter, and no injuries were reported on the ground.

The helicopter “was a private touring helicopter,” said Houston City Councilman Mario Castillo. He said it in X.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes of the accident.

“This is a tragic event tonight, a tragic loss of life,” Whitmire said Sunday night.

Officials said the helicopter took off from Ellington Field, about 15 minutes from the crash site. It is currently unknown where the plane was headed.

The crash is under investigation by local authorities, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
