Former Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona said Sunday he would vote for Vice President Harris because of her conservative values and belief in the rule of law.
“I'm voting for Kamala Harris not because she's a Republican or a conservative, but because she's a conservative,” Flake said in a statement. interview on MSNBC's “Versi.”
“Conservatives believe first and foremost in the rule of law, and we believe in a former president who lost a free and fair election and tried to overturn that election to become president. Why would conservatives support someone like that?” ” he asked, referring to former President Trump.
Flake also said Harris is better on issues once closely tied to the Republican platform, such as free trade, and believes “tariffs can be used” but only in “certain circumstances.” Ta.
“But believing that tariffs are going to bring in a lot of money to the Treasury is exactly the opposite of what Republicans think,” Flake said.
Flake, who supports Harris' presidential bid, said Harris is playing the “long game” and wants to return the Republican Party to the values he says embraced it.
“If you're going to play the long game, as a Republican you want to go back to traditional Republican values. I think that's a winning concept in Arizona. That's a winning platform,” Flake said. When asked what “success” would mean for the Republican Party in this election, he answered:
“But we can't navigate this demographic impasse that we're heading into now as a Republican Party by following in the footsteps of the previous president,” he added.
Flake left the Senate in 2019, choosing not to seek re-election after his first six-year term. He became known as one of the former president's most vocal Republican opponents in the Senate and suffered from low approval ratings during the latter half of his term. He supported President Biden in 2020 and served as Biden's ambassador to Turkey until he resigned last month.
