Former President Trump has been quick to take advantage of that by suspending his campaign in battleground Pennsylvania over the weekend, working at a McDonald's drive-thru and selling T-shirts commemorating the event.
The shirt features a photo of the Republican candidate leaning out of a drive-thru window and waving, and reads “MAGADonald's.”
“We have prepared a Mac gift!” Mr. Trump The campaign store website says: “I'm the first and only 2024 presidential candidate to work at McDonald's.”
President Trump donned an apron and stepped behind the counter at a McDonald's in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on Sunday. He worked at a drive-thru and a fryer as part of a campaign photo shoot after mocking Vice President Harris for saying she worked at a fast-food chain in college.
Harris' campaign had sought to use her past experience to appeal to middle-class voters, but the former president disputed her claims.
Trump also heavily criticized Harris on his own fundraising site over inflation under the Biden administration.
“Thanks to Kamala, food prices are through the roof! I'm making America affordable again, and I need your help to do it,” the site said.
President Trump's love of fast food is well known. He has been photographed eating McDonald's on campaign planes, and during his time in office provided products from the chain, Wendy's and Burger King to college athletes visiting the White House.
Harris stressed on Sunday that she currently works “15 more minutes than Kamala,” adding that she plans to work at a french fry stand in the future. Harris said he did that when he was employed at the restaurant.
Harris' campaign criticized Trump's actions as a publicity stunt. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, also accused the former president of disrespecting McDonald's workers by “cosplaying” as them.
After President Trump visited its Bucks County franchise, McDonald's sought to emphasize its political neutrality and said it does not support political candidates. The franchise responded to Trump's request to visit the restaurant on-site.
Trump is also trying to capitalize on other political events. He released his photo shirt last year after surrendering to Georgia authorities in an election-related legal battle.
