Far fewer newspapers are endorsing Harris than backed Clinton or Biden

U.S. newspaper support for Democratic presidential candidates has fallen by more than 60% this year since 2016, when Vice President Kamala Harris became the party's front-runner, according to rough estimates from Fox News Digital.

In 2016, more than 240 newspapers endorsed Hillary Clinton, but only 20 endorsed Trump. In 2020, 14 newspapers supported Mr. Trump and 120 supported Mr. Biden.

Nearly 80 newspapers endorsed Harris this year, while fewer than 10 endorsed Trump.

Newspapers have traditionally supported candidates in elections since the 19th century, when newspapers were more closely tied to political parties. Over time, newspapers moved toward greater independence from the party apparatus, and the newspaper's editorial board took over advocacy, with the editorial board's ideological leanings often serving as an indicator of advocacy results.

Several newspapers that have traditionally supported Republican candidates either endorsed Biden or none of the candidates in 2020. The Arizona Republic, which has supported Republicans for decades, was one of the few newspapers to endorse Biden.

Some publications that had never previously endorsed a presidential candidate, such as USA Today, broke with tradition and endorsed Biden in 2020.
