Jeffrey Goldberg goes after family of slain soldier for criticizing his latest hit piece

The Atlantic's Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg responds to Vanessa Guillen's latest article alleging that former President Donald Trump did not respond well to Guillen's funeral expenses even though he offered to pay for them. He attacked his family after they raised objections.

When this story was first published, Vanessa's sister Myra Gillen slammed Atlantic for “exploitation.” [Vanessa’s] Die for politics,” added Myra, who had already voted for Trump.

Vanessa Guillen was killed in 2020 by a soldier she worked with at Fort Hood. Her death caused a huge outcry as the military severely misjudged the investigation, giving the murder suspect a chance to commit suicide before being taken into custody.

“So, again, I understand the sensibilities around this, but…”

Mark Meadows, Trump's chief of staff at the time, insisted that Trump never said, “It doesn't cost $60,000 to bury a fucking Mexican!” As Goldberg claimed.

When asked about the denial and criticism of his story in one of his lectures, CNN interviewGoldberg dismissed the Guillen family's comments.

“As for my sister, I understand why this story has hurt them and I, of course, feel very sorry for this family, as we all do, but… The fact remains that when the family visited Donald Trump, as stated in the story, he said kind words and offered to pay for the funeral. Five months later, when the topic came up, he said something very unkind about the funeral, but I point out that he didn't. Pay for the funeral,” Goldberg said.

“So, again, I understand the sensitivity around this, but the truth is the truth is that the people who were at the meeting had become somewhat accustomed to the way Donald Trump spoke. People were shocked by what he said, and that's how I learned about it,'' he continued.

“Yeah, and the details of how he ended up not paying for the funeral is a story in itself, even without comment,” host Jake Tapper added.

“Not only did he falsify our conversation, he completely lied with his sensational stories. More importantly, he targeted my client and Vanessa Guillen for cheap political gain. took advantage of his murder,” Natalie Khawam, an attorney for the Guillen family, said of Goldberg. “I would also like to point out that the timing of this 'talk' is highly questionable, as this conversation that President Trump is said to have took place over four years ago! Why are we talking about it now?” What's the story?
