“The truth is the truth” about Vanessa Guillen's Gold Star family, Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg said Wednesday on CNN's “The Lead.”
Host Jake Tapper said, “We'll start the article with a story related to Donald Trump and Vanessa Guillen. Vanessa was a 20-year-old Army private. She was killed at Fort Hood. In July, he invited her family to the Oval Office and offered to pay for her funeral.
It's also worth noting that Mark Meadows denies this. Guillen's sister posted on Twitter: “Wow, I don't understand how you would use my sister's death for political purposes.'' It's hurtful and disrespectful to the important changes she's made for our military. ” and says she voted for Donald Trump. This was yesterday. How do you respond to the backlash you're receiving? ”
Goldberg said, “So, with Mark Meadows, it's totally typical of this kind of thing. Obviously, Mark Meadows also claims that Donald Trump won the 2020 election, but I do not consider Mark Meadows to be a reliable source on these matters.
He added: “As for my sister, I understand why they were hurt by this story and of course feel very sorry, as we all do for this family. But the fact remains that, as mentioned in the article, when the family visited Donald Trump, he said kind words and offered to pay for the funeral five months later. When he did, he said something very unkind about the funeral. Note that he didn't pay for it. Again, I understand the sensibilities around this. , the truth is the truth. The people who were in the meeting, who were somewhat used to the way Donald Trump speaks, were shocked by that statement, and I learned that from it.”
“Yes, and the details of how he ended up not paying for the funeral is a story in itself,” Ms Tapper said.
