Biden-district Republican Nick LaLota projected to win re-election in New York

Rep. Nick LaLota (D-N.Y.) is expected to win his bid for a second term in Congress, a key victory for House Republican leaders as they fight to maintain their majority.

He defeated Democrat John Avron, a former CNN anchor, in a race that was expected to have a slight edge for Republicans but was overall close, according to Associated Press projections.

In the 2022 election, residents in suburban New York and California rebelled against progressive crime policies in local cities, resulting in Republicans sweeping key seats outside the Big Apple, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area.

Larota's district leans more to the right than some of its neighboring Congressional districts and is one of 16 seats represented by Republicans won by President Biden in 2020.

Mr. Avron, who is both a journalist and an author, quit his job as a political commentator to run for office.

House Democratic and Republican campaign arms devoted time and resources to the race as part of a broader fight for control of Congress.
