Tom Hanks jokingly called movie critics “shitholes” during an interview with Conan O'Brien.
Hanks was on O'Brien's podcast. Conan O'Brien needed a friend to promote his new movie “Here” and was asked about his 1996 directorial debut “That Thing You Do!” It is said to be considered a “cult classic.” At first it was a disappointing reception.
Hanks replied: “Let me tell you something about the assholes who write about movies…” He then went on to describe the writers who criticized That Thing You Do. At the time of its release, it was criticized for appearing to be “made for TV and not much of a story,” and more recently called the film a “cult classic.”
Hanks is not the only major Hollywood figure to slam critics. Angered by the negative press surrounding his latest film, “Megalopolis,'' Francis Ford Coppola said: “It's not acceptable to attack a film because it goes against the current rules of Hollywood,” he said, releasing a trailer for the film that anticipated negative reviews of his earlier films. (The trailer was quickly pulled after the quote was revealed to be fake.) Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron also responded to negative comments about his work: . Show me three out of your four highest-grossing movies. Then let's talk about the effects of dialogue. ”
But Hanks quickly struck a conciliatory tone, saying: That's a carnival and a contest, right? I believe it. ”
Directed by Robert Zemeckis and billed as a “Forrest Gump reunion” starring an aging Hanks and his Gump co-star Robin Wright, the film was given one star by Benjamin Lee of The Guardian. It is widely expected by critics to win.
