South Carolina defeats noncitizen voting ban

Voters in South Carolina on Tuesday rejected a Republican-backed proposal to block non-Americans from voting in elections, which critics say is “completely unnecessary.”

The measure would amend state constitutions to allow “only” citizens to vote, as former President Trump and other Republicans have promoted baseless claims of widespread voter fraud by non-citizens. It was something.

State Sen. Chip Campsen (RS.C.) said in obtained remarks:post and courierHe said the effort was a “belt and suspenders approach” to prevent later changes in court.

“The provisions of the Constitution are long-term. There is no reason to object to this unless you agree to a non-citizen vote,” Campsen said.

But Democrats and their allies point out that non-citizens are already barred from voting in federal elections and are only allowed to participate in local elections in some cities. I'm against it.

Illegal voting and legal non-referendum voting are separate issues, but the two are often confused in public.

But numbers compressed over the years also paint a different picture, with a study conducted by the Brennan Center for Justice finding that of the millions of votes counted in dozens of precincts, there were “suspected non-referendum votes.” It has been pointed out that there are an estimated 30 incidents.in 2016.

South Carolina is one of the few states to ban non-citizens from voting this year, as immigration is a top priority for many voters in the 2024 presidential election.
