The federal agency responsible for enforcing the military draft if the need arises reposted a vile tweet on Wednesday that suggested the United States was moving in a direction reminiscent of Nazi Germany.
“To all you idiots who still believe military service is voluntary. Don't forget Germany in 1936,” the X post shared by the Selective Service System read.
The tweet was originally posted by a user named “SloJoe,” whose profile picture included a photo of the late General and Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The post appears to be referring to Adolf Hitler's decision to reintroduce conscription in Nazi Germany before occupying the Rhineland in 1936, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles.
Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have ramped up comparisons between President-elect Donald Trump and Hitler in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign.
The Selective Service System did not respond to The Post's request for comment.
The reposted tweet remained on SSS's X account for more than an hour, even after it was reported by a CBS News reporter and other users on the social media platform.
“What's going on with the @SSS_gov (Selective Service) X account?” reporter Jim LaPorta wrote about X.
“Why is an official Selective Service account retweeting this??” another confused X user tweeted.
U.S. law requires nearly all men between the ages of 18 and 25 to enroll in the Selective Service System, which maintains the nation's draft database.

In June, President Trump rejected the idea of pushing for mandatory military service during his second term in the White House.
President Trump, 78, weighed in on the idea of mandatory military service in response to a Washington Post report that said some former government officials and Republicans considered mandatory national service a “remedy” for declining military draft numbers. He called it a “ridiculous idea.”
“That story is completely false. In fact, I never even considered the idea,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
