Late night host Jimmy Kimmel fought back tears as he reacted to former President Trump's victory in Tuesday's election.
“To be honest, last night was a terrible night,” Kimmel told his audience Wednesday night. “It was a terrible night for women, for children, and for the hundreds of thousands of hardworking immigrants who keep this country running.”
His voice cracked and Kimmel paused.
“Well, for health care, for climate, for science, for journalism,” he continued, as the studio audience applauded. “For justice, for free speech. It was a terrible night for the poor, the middle class, and the elderly who rely on Social Security.”
Tears filled Kimmel's eyes again as he continued, “For our allies in Ukraine, for NATO, for truth and democracy and decency.”
Kimmel said Tuesday night was “a terrible night for everyone who voted against Trump. And guess what a terrible night it was for everyone who voted for Trump, who still don't realize it.” There just isn’t one.”
Kimmel has long been an outspoken critic of Trump, and days before the election he gave an 18-minute monologue imploring Republicans not to vote for Trump this week.
“If Mr. Trump gets more of those votes, even if it doesn't go our way, we'll accept it,” he said. “We won't like it, but we'll accept it because that's the way it should be.”
