Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo reveals shtick that ‘p—ed off’ ESPN executives and got him ‘in trouble’

Some of the most legendary media personalities aren't perfect.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo has been appearing weekly on ESPN's “First Take” since February 2022, but his latest appearance led to a rough patch with his bosses.

Last week, Russo said Stephen A. Smith “took a gummy” before talking about the “Yankee nonsense” of the World Series. Russo admitted he was “flying.”

However, he clearly crossed the line by removing the name of another ESPN employee.

“I said, 'Let me have one,' and I got back together.” [Jessica] Mendoza and I ate gummy bears. ” Russo said.

Russo mentioned throughout the episode that Mendoza did not actually ingest the gummies, but Russo quickly stated that Mendoza simply “saw” them.

During an appearance on the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast, Russo said the foolish act “spurred” ESPN executives.

“I was in trouble because it wasn’t accurate.” Russo admitted. “Because I put Jessica Mendoza in the mix and I shouldn't have done that. … I showed her that she was in the mix and it's not the right thing to do. There wasn't. So I'll take that hit.” “

Podcast host Jimmy Traina asked Russo if Mendoza was “failed,” to which Russo replied, “ESPN was.” Mendoza may not be satisfied either.

“She flew to Oregon right after. We haven't heard from her,” Russo said. “But what is ESPN… going to do? You can't please everyone.”

This isn't the first time Russo has garnered attention for his appearance on “First Take.” Last year, on the 60th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination, he said this historic event was “not an isolated transaction.”

“If anyone thought Lee Harvey Oswald did it all by himself, they'd take the gummies,” he said.
