Bynum flips Oregon House seat, will be state's first Black member of Congress

According to Decision Desk Headquarters, Democrat Janelle Bynum is projected to win Oregon's 5th Congressional District;first black congressmanHe will represent Oregon in Congress.

Mr. Bynum, the Oregon congressman, ousted one-term incumbent Republican Rep. Lori Chavez Delemer, who flipped her seat to the Republican field for the first time in decades during the midterm elections.

Democrats were optimistic about Bynum's chances of retaking the seat, pointing to his victories over Chavez Delemer in two state races. She defeated last year's Democratic candidate, progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner, in the primary and won the party's endorsement.

Establishment Democrats have rallied around Mr. Bynum, with support from Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) and Emily's List, the group that supported Ms. McLeod-Skinner two years ago.

Biden won the district representing the suburbs of Portland and Salem in 2020 by a nearly 9-point margin.
