Comedian and TV personality Bill Maher said this week that Democrats need to “look in the mirror” after Vice President Harris lost the 2024 White House race to President-elect Trump.
“This is a message to losers: Losers, please look in the mirror,” Maher said Friday night in a monologue on HBO's “Real Time.” “No? Well, maybe you should. Sorry. Well, that's how I feel. Look in the mirror, losers.”
“For months, Democrats have been saying, 'Why is this coming?' And they're right, it's not,” he said. “They couldn't imagine a second term for Trump, but they should have. When does America refuse by the second?
Mr. Maher said that Mr. Trump had “taken advantage of the game” by capturing all seven battleground states. Maher, a frequent Trump critic, acknowledged Friday night that the president-elect improved in most demographics this election and was able to make inroads into some Democratic strongholds.
“He has great coordination,” he said. “He's retained the old crowd that likes him. He's won over a lot of new voters. He's got a lot of people who say they just want to see what he does.”
After the election, some in the Democratic camp began to wrestle with how the party should move forward, communicate its message, and advance its strategy. Some say the party has left the working class behind, while others say it has moved too far to the left and has little appeal to voters in more moderate battleground states.
Maher said in late September that he was confident that Trump would ultimately lose to Harris in November, insisting he was “not even worried.”
The comedian also said this week that Harris had failed to make a “good” case for her and had failed to run a “perfect” campaign.
“I think America is totally motivated to elect women. I just didn't like the last two people mentioned,” Maher said. said Meanwhile, later adding that the vice president “didn't make a good case” and added, “She didn't condemn things in the past that people didn't like. She just tried to ignore them.”
