South Dakota Republican says Thune will ‘be a great leader’ for Senate

Sen. Mike Rounds (R.S.D.) said Sunday that Sen. John Thune (R.C.) will be a “great leader” for the Senate as Senate Republicans prepare to return to power. He said he was deaf.

“I've known John Thune since the 1980s, and he's going to be a great leader,” Lowndes told NewsNation's Chris Stilwald on “The Hill Sunday.”

“But the good thing for Republicans is that they have three really good people competing for the top spot as majority leader. So I can't say anything bad about the other two candidates, but… “I think we have a real winner in John Thune,” he added.

Thune is vying for the seat of longtime Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Ky.). (Florida State). With Tuesday's election results, Republicans are expected to take control of the Senate in January.

“This is part of the deal,” Lowndes said during an appearance on “The Hill Sunday.” “He wants change in the Senate. He wants the Senate to actually go back and actually function. Let's actually get some things done in time for change. ”

Thune recently urged President-elect Trump not to intervene in the Senate Republican leadership race, saying it was in the president-elect's “best interests” not to take sides.

But supporters of Mr. Cornyn and Mr. Scott say Mr. Trump's request to avoid the race to replace Mr. McConnell suggests Mr. Thune's anxiety about the possibility that the next president will support his rival. said.

“He's scared. He knows Trump won't support him. If he knows that, getting President Trump involved will hurt him,” a Senate Republican aide said. Ta.

The Hill has reached out to Scott and Cornyn's offices.
