Mike Williams became a hero for the Steelers in the days after Aaron Rodgers' final selection.
The former Jet scored the winning touchdown in the Steelers' 28-27 victory over the Commanders on Sunday afternoon at Northwest Stadium.
Pittsburgh was leading Washington by six points with just over two minutes remaining when Russell Wilson sent a deep pass to Williams, who was hurtling toward the end zone.
The pass fell into Williams' arms. His 32-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes, 22 seconds left in the game gave the Steelers the lead.
The catch was Williams' only chance of the game, and the only time Wilson was a trade-deadline acquisition.
The Steelers acquired Williams on Tuesday in a deal with the Jets that ends his tenure in New York, and that deal also included Rodgers being called up after the loss to the Bills.
Late last week, Williams expressed optimism about his future with the Steelers when speaking to reporters after practice.
“I'm a playmaker,” Williams said. According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. “I want to make plays. I'm going to put in the work and show that I deserve to be on the field.”
He certainly appeared to do just that on Sunday's winning play in his Steelers debut.
Williams fell out of favor with Rodgers, but expressed the belief that the receiver did so because he missed time working with the Jets quarterback during the offseason.
“Going there after the ACL, there were no OTAs or training camps to get the chemistry right… [Rodgers] It's really detailed. He likes what he likes. It was probably a mistake not to switch quickly,” Williams explained in the same media session.
The Steelers are one of the top teams in the AFC North, and Sunday's win was the team's seventh of the season.
