Actor Ben Affleck says Hollywood needs to change its mechanics to better align incentives for actors and the rest of the industry.
Part of that criticism is that actors are paid large salaries in exchange for creative control to protect themselves from the threat of cancel culture and other pitfalls of the industry.
“One more false statement and you're canceled, or one more and you'll never work on the movie again.”
In an interview with Deadline, Affleck explained how his venture with sidekick Matt Damon seeks to realign incentives to improve the entertainment offerings offered to viewers.
“One of the things we suggested to the artists is that artists who take on more responsibility in terms of film will be given greater freedom and freedom to tell their own stories, but it's really about that. It only works if you have people who are dedicated to it.'' We believe that when you do that, you get the best creative results. They care about what their audience experiences, both commercially and creatively. ”
Affleck and Damon founded Artist Equity to help actors invest in projects they're starring in. This allows actors to have more stakes for success and be more involved in the development process.
“In this industry, we're all exposed to this kind of anxiety. Whether you're an actor, director, writer, your phone can stop ringing,” Affleck said.
“I don't know when this situation will end,” he explained. “One more wrong statement and I'm fired, one more movie bomb and I'll never be able to work again, and I have a family, etc. Of course people act in their own best interests.” I try to be.”
He cited his film Gigli as an example of an actor earning millions of dollars even though the film did very poorly at the box office.
“I got a big cash salary because of that,” he said. “Well, now that I think about it, I don't think it's right to say we lost money. Even though it was probably the most famous bomb of all time, it wasn't the biggest money-losing movie of all time. Still, it doesn't seem right. “No” myself. “
Ironically, Affleck made headlines a decade ago when he spoke out violently. attacked Author Sam Harris made criticisms of Islam that were politically incorrect and violated Affleck's gentle sensibilities.
