There is no ‘golden goose’ draft pick for Giants to lose for

Not all Giants fans were devastated by perhaps the franchise's most embarrassing loss during its eight-year drought.

In fact, some are happy that the Giants (2-8) moved from No. 7 to No. 2 on Sunday in Tancaston's premature 2025 NFL Draft rankings.

This was a byproduct of an overtime loss in Germany to the fellow lowly Panthers (3-7) and upset wins by the Patriots (3-7) and Saints (3-7).

Give a win to Pro Tank fans who are tired of watching proud players and coaches win meaningless games late in the season and worsen their draft position.

Every time it works, like beating the Commanders in 2019 and drafting Andrew Thomas with the No. 4 pick instead of Chase Young at No. 2, there's at least one counterexample where it doesn't work.

For example, the Giants' three-game winning streak last season, when rookie Tommy DeVito improved from 2-8 to 5-8, forced one of their top three quarterbacks out of range. Their attempts to move into the top three from sixth place were then rejected.

The only certainty right now is that general manager Joe Schon won't select a running back at No. 2 like Dave Gettleman did with Saquon Barkley in 2018 (Boise State's Ashton I feel sorry for Jeanty).

The next seven games will determine whether the Giants remain in second place and Schoen retains his pick.

But what exactly are the Giants set up for? If Daniel Jones is benched and released at the end of the season with a $22.2 million salary cap dead charge, will there be a quarterback to replace him?

ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller only has first-round grades and top-32 rankings for two college quarterbacks: Colorado's Shedule Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward.

“This is a unique class. We don't have great offensive tackles. We don't have great quarterbacks,” Miller told the Post. “Great players play cornerbacks and defensive tackles. I think what you see more than anything is that it's not going to be as expensive as it used to be for teams that want to trade for a quarterback. There's no golden goose. Yo.”

The Giants are looking for an underperforming 2023 first-rounder like Michigan's Will Johnson, Notre Dame's Benjamin Morrison, or Colorado's Travis Hunter (a two-way star who could also be a top pick at receiver). Acquiring a shutdown cornerback to beat Deonte, who is a top pick, would certainly fill a major need. It's not a very demanding role.

“There are more questions about Johnson and Morrison now than there were before the season because of the injuries,” one NFL scout said.

The combination of Michigan defensive tackles Mason Graham and Dexter Lawrence should instantly strengthen the NFL's worst rushing defense.

But Giants fans aren't happy with the loss of any player other than franchise-changing quarterbacks Jayden Daniels (Commanders) and CJ Stroud (Texans).

The Giants have had at least one top-10 pick in six of the past seven drafts. Jones finished sixth in 2019.

The Jaguars (2-8) currently hold the No. 1 pick and will not be in the quarterback market (Trevor Lawrence is under contract for $275 million), but in Week 11 There are 11 teams with two and three wins.

As many as seven players could be considering changing their starting QB this offseason.

This could be stock-boosting news for Miller's next quarterbacks, including Georgia's Carson Beck, Alabama's Jalen Milroe and Texas' Quinn Ewers.

“Some scouts might take Beck in the third round,” Miller said. [evaluation]”

Sanders, Beck, and Ewers were all at the top of mock drafts when the season started. Ward and Milroe are the big winners.

“What happens in the spring is important,” Miller said, referring to the college All-Star Game, NFL combine, pro day and team meetings, “so we're still going to see quite a bit of development in these quarterbacks.” spoke.
