Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) said Monday that he would “sit down and work with” Tom Homan, whom President-elect Trump has named as “border czar.”
“We've been on some shows together, we've done some things together,” Cuellar told NewsNation's Blake Berman on Homan's show “The Hill.” Ta. “We agreed on a lot of things, but we have to make sure we don’t become far left or far right.”
“And I think people like Tom Homan…and I'll tell you this, we can sit down and work together because I've been doing this for a long time.” he added.
President Trump announced Sunday that he would appoint Homan, a former director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to be the incoming administration's “border czar.” In an announcement via Truth Social, the president-elect said Homan's responsibilities include “southern border, northern border, all maritime and air security.”
“I've known Tom for a long time and there's no one better at securing and managing our borders,” Trump wrote. “Similarly, Tom Homan will be responsible for all deportations of illegal aliens to their countries of origin. Congratulations to Tom. He will be doing a great and long overdue job.” I have no doubt.”
President Trump has been promising for some time that he would carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
In an interview with NewsNation, Cuéllar said there were “some things that I might disagree with” with Homan, including “such as family separation.” But Cuellar also said he is “very passionate about this job.”
Asked by journalist Cecilia Vega on CBS' “60 Minutes'' late last month about the possibility of proceeding with “mass deportations without separating families,” Homan said, “That's possible.” It is possible to deport them together.”
Homan also said in an interview with FOX Business on Monday that “Thank God, American citizens” and “legal immigrants are completely safe.”
The Hill has reached out to Border 911, the organization where Homan is chairman and CEO and serves as President Trump's spokesperson, for comment.
NewsNation is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which also owns The Hill.
