Exxon chief presses Trump to stay in Paris climate agreement

Exxon CEO Darren Woods urged President-elect Donald Trump to remain in the Paris climate accord as the oil and gas industry prepares to take office.

In an interview with wall street journalWoods said the United States should not withdraw from the agreement, an international commitment aimed at reducing the effects of climate change.

Woods argued that President Trump's proposed withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 agreement would cause confusion around the world on tackling climate change. The Trump administration first announced it would withdraw from the agreement in 2017.

According to the magazine, Exxon has publicly supported the Paris Agreement since 2015.

In 2020, the United States officially withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement. The deal was activated a year before President Trump's first term, making it the only country in the world to withdraw from the agreement.

Under President Biden, the United States rejoined the agreement in 2021.

Woods told the Journal that it is not helpful for businesses to have the “pendulum swing back and forth” as administrations change.

“I don't think stop and start is right for business,” he says. “It's very inefficient. It creates a lot of uncertainty.”

The Hill has reached out to President Trump's press secretary for comment.
